Our Wednesday's Child Feature is a WAVY TV institution that began in 1981.
Over the years a variety of reporters have been shining a spotlight on children who are in single parent homes and in need of a mentor, or are in foster care waiting for adoption.
The goal of the Wednesday's Child report is to connect those children with loving, committed adults. The kids need a man or woman to call the "Team Up" Mentoring program in Norfolk, or Big Brothers Big Sisters Williamsburg, and volunteer to spend one to three hours a week with the child.
The other objective is to assist the nearly 2-thousand children in foster care in Virginia in finding families to adopt them.
Don Roberts took over the assignment of producing the Wednesday's Child reports in 1989. Alveta Ewell and Kelly Wright also contributed.
The reports have featured hundreds of children over the years. On occasion, you'll see updates and learn whether the kids found mentors or adoptive families.
Wednesday's Child airs on our 5:30 p.m. newscast every week, and during the 5-am show, WAVY NEWS TEN SUNRISE.
