The Monarchs decided to leave the Colonial Athletic Association and join Conference USA. ODU is scheduled to join C-USA on July 1, 2013.
ODU asked that they remain eligible to compete for all conference championships during the 2012-2013 season and they also requested that their effective date of withdrawal be June 30, 2013. The presidents unanimously voted to set July 1, 2012 as the date both ODU and Georgia State University would become ineligible.
"The conferences Bylaws were well understood and evaluated when the institutions made their decision to withdraw from the conference," CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said in a news release.
The following sports are impacted by the decision: baseball, basketball, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Individual student-athletes from Georgia State and Old Dominion will still be able to compete in CAA championships in cross country, swimming and diving, track and field and wrestling.
WAVY Sports Director Bruce Rader will have more on Tuesday's decision, coming up tonight on the Sportswrap.
