NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Old Dominion University wasn't the only team to enjoy home field advantage for the first time in 2013.
The Christopher Newport University and Hampton University football teams both opened their home schedules on Saturday. The Pirates faced off with Tennesseee Tech, while the Captains drew in-state rival Hampden-Sydney College.
The Captains caused eight Tiger turnovers in a less-than-stellar offensive affair, and held on for a 17-7 win, while the Pirates start their season off 0-3. Tennessee Tech dealt Hampton a 30-27 loss.
The Pirates lead 20-17 late in the third quarter, then surrendered 13 unanswered to the visitors. Head Coach Donovan Rose's team scored when Jaylian Williamson caught a Rashad Riddick pass in the corner of the endzone and barely kept his toe in bounds to make it a three-point game.
The ensuing on-side kick attempt rolled out of bounds, and Tech was able to run out the clock.
Newport News police officers are in the middle of a massive operation to get wanted criminals out of the neighborhoods. They are rounding up everyone who has an outstanding warrant.
Hampton Roads Transit customers could see higher fares to ride the bus, light rail and ferry.
Running a red light could cost you a hefty fine, even if an officer doesn't pull you over. Cameras are going up at intersections across Hampton Roads, and the most recent went live Monday in downtown Norfolk.
