NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Christopher Newport University football team is far from unnoticed at this point in the young season. The captains are 3-0, ranked as the 22 best team in the country, and off to its best start ever.
CNU opened up with a 17-10 win at then no. 16 Salisbury, returned to Newport News and took down Hampden-Sydney 17-7, then ran all over visiting Shenandoah 34-6. Head Coach Matt Kelchner is pleased with his team's success, but not exactly surprised.
"I had a pretty good vibe in the sprint...a pretty good idea that they had a chance to be pretty good," said Kelchner.
The unit that's seemingly made the biggest statement is the defense. The captains are allowing just shy of 70 yards a game on the ground, and even caused eight turnovers against the Tigers alone.
"we don't have individual stars on the team," said senior linebacker Derrick Adams, "We all have teammates who love each other and play together as a whole unit."
The captains will now test the conference waters when they travel to Methodist (2-2) for their USA South opener.
