Virginia Beach, VA (WAVY) - Jonathon Lamagda opened a few eyes when the cross country coach at Cox High School gave him his first shot.
"Jonathon is a special breed," said Cox head coach Lanny Doan, "We knew we had something special going when he finished third in the Beach District in the cross country, second in the region, first freshman in the state in cross country to finish 17th."
On Saturday, Lamagda has a chance to open some eyes nationally. The 15-year old freshman will run in the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. "Were pretty confident about the two mile. Last years winning time was 938.
"So if all goes well Jonathon has a real good chance of winning that," said Doan.
As for Lamagda, it all starts with confidence. "The first goal for any runner is to know they can finish the race," he said, "A strong runner knows they are going to run their race and do what they have to do to win."
Norfolk Police are investigating the cause of death for male found unconscious on the beach.
