VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach police have identified the runner who collapsedand died in Sunday's Rock 'N' Roll 1/2 Marathon at the VirginiaBeach Oceanfront.
At 8:50 a.m. police say 23-year-old Erik Wellumson of Chesapeakecollapsed near 8th Street and Atlantic Avenue. Medics were nearbyand tried to resuscitate him. Wellumson was transported to thehospital where doctors later pronounced him dead.
Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon officials released this statementfrom Dr. Lewis Maharam, the medical director for Elite Racing:
"At Sunday's half marathon a race participant collapsed in frontof medical personnel. The runner was immediately treated andtransported to the hospital where the participant was pronounceddead. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We have spokenwith the family and they have asked everyone to please respecttheir privacy during this difficult time."
Police continue to investigate the cause of death.
