RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - Several local agencies received the Governor's 2013 Transportation Safety Awards Thursday.
The awards are given by the Department of Motor Vehicle's Highway Safety Office to recognize those who have made outstanding efforts to change the behavior's of Virginia's motorists. Nominations were accepted in March.
Drive Safe Hampton Roads' Specialized Transportation Safety Committee received the award in the Motor Carrier Safety category for its work to promote safety through several events.
Norfolk Checker Taxi received the award in the Public Transportation category for its work to prevent drunk driving by offering free rides for those too impaired to be behind the wheel and its work with the Navy.
Joe Flanagan with WVEC received the award in the Media category for his work with the "Old, Used, Borrowed and Abused Child Safety Seat Round-Up."
