ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A medical condition is thought to be the reason for a fatal crash in Accomack County Thursday morning.
Around 10:30 a.m., troopers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on Route 13 in the 21000 block of Lankford Highway, Corinne Geller with the Virginia State Police said.
Preliminary investigation revealed a flatbed tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on Route 13 when it ran off the right side of the roadway. Geller said the truck traveled about 900 feet before hitting a ditch and overturning.
The driver, 74-year-old Ernest J. Gibbons, Jr. of Fruitland, Md. was partially ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene. Geller said he was not wearing a seatbelt.
A company has been hired to complete the repairs to the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge on the Outer Banks, but how long those repairs will take remains unknown.
Drivers traveling between Hatteras Island and the mainland were forced to use an emergency ferry Wednesday, following the sudden closure of the Bonner Bridge Tuesday.
State officials say construction on a new Bonner Bridge has been delayed for years because of a legal battle with an environmental group.
