OFF FRASER ISLAND (NBC/APTN) - Rescuers in Australia's Queensland state helped five of a pod of seven stranded killer whales.
Local media reported that a mother whale and her calf died.
Officials said it's unusual for killer whales to become stranded, let alone in Australian waters.
The whales appeared to have been heading southeast into deeper water along the coastline of Fraser Island when they got stuck.
The five surviving whales swam to the south of the sandbar once they were freed and away from shallow waters.
