VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A shark attack in Virginia Beach claimed the life of a 10-year-old Richmond boy on September 1, 2001.
Police said David Peltier was swimming with his father about fifty yards from shore, in the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach at 6 p.m., when the shark suddenly attacked his leg. It didn't let go until David's father jabbed the shark in the eye.
The child was rushed to the hospital with bites along his left leg and inside his left thigh. He died at the hospital. David's father was treated for an injury to his left hand.
A routine traffic stop in Chesapeake resulted in a three-city pursuit Friday morning.
Wet weather is expected to move into the area over the weekend, forcing some areas to cancel or change their holiday events.
