NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginian-Pilot’s editorial board is calling for the resignation of Gov. Bob McDonnell in the wake of scandal embroiling the governor and his family.
The relationship between McDonnell and Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams has been under the microscope for weeks after it was revealed the McDonnell family accepted more than $145,000 in business and personal loans and gifts from Williams.
At this time, there is an investigation by both federal and state officials as to whether the governor’s office was used illegally to help Star Scientific. Monday, the governor and his wife, Maureen, as well as their attorneys met with federal prosecutors.
There could be possible criminal charges against the McDonnell family in reference to the scandal, but Politico reports the case may not be an easy one to prosecute due to the lax state ethics laws in the Commonwealth.
As the case unfolds, the editorial board at the Pilot published an editorial on why it feels the governor should resign from office.
"McDonnell's failure to completely disclose his family's financial ties to Star Scientific has diminished his credibility and drained his capacity to lead the commonwealth,” the editorial reads. “The latest revelations, even without the possibility of an indictment of the commonwealth's chief executive, make the prospect of his continued leadership untenable. He must devote his full attention to sorting out his personal and legal problems.
“For the good of his office, of the state and of every Virginian - and for the good of his family and of himself - McDonnell should resign.”
