NORFOLK (AP) - Gov. Bob McDonnell says he has completed returning gifts from a major political donor who showered his family with thousands of dollars in gratuities the past four years.
In an Associated Press interview aboard the state aircraft Monday, the governor said the private attorney he hired to represent him in federal and state investigations notified him that all the tangible gifts from Star Scientific's chief executive, Jonnie Williams, have been returned.
He has already repaid loans valued at nearly $125,000, and two of his daughters have returned gifts of $10,000 and $15,000 he gave them for their weddings.
McDonnell did not report the gifts on his annual financial disclosure statements, citing state law that requires disclosure only of gifts directly to officeholders, not members of their families.
