VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The legal wrangling continues as the 21st District House raceremains officially undecided.
Republican Ron Villanueva leads by 16 votes over incumbentDemocratic Delegate Bobby Mathieson.
Lawyers for both sides admit the matter appears to be headed tocourt.
On Thursday, a judge ordered election officials to stopcanvassing Tuesday's votes. Mathieson claims more than 300 absenteeballots are "unaccounted for." He wants a judge to intervene.
Meantime, Villanueva's attorney contends he wasn't notified ofthe court order beforehand and has asked for inclusion in anyfuture related hearings.
After each election, the city's Electoral Board meets to reviewballot logs, and check paperwork from precincts to certify winningcandidates. That process is now at a standstill because of thecourt order.
Mathieson's attorney sent letters to election officials Fridayasking for paperwork pertaining to those absentee ballots and hasissued a Monday morning deadline for them to comply.
