CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (WAVY) - The body of a woman found in the trunk of a car Friday night has been identified as 18-year-old Danielle Dennis-Towne.
The Roanoke Medical Examiner's Office says the young woman was shot in the head. Police are now investigating this case as a homicide.
It took several days for the Medical Examiner's Office to confirm her identity because they were waiting on dental records.
Police in Kitty Hawk, N.C. put out a nationwide bulletin for Dennis-Towne the afternoon of July 15. She was believed to be traveling in a 1994 Ford Mustang with 19-year-old Enrico Mascaro.
The search for the pair was reportedly launched after two citizens exploring the Kitty Hawk Woods area came across a bloody scene and reported it to police.
Police used cell phone towers to track down Mascaro's Mustang in Clifton Forge, Virginia. There was no one in it when officers located the car, so they waited. When Mascaro returned to the vehicle, police searched the trunk and found a woman's body, according to Clifton Forge Police Chief Barry Balser. Mascaro was taken to Allegheny County Jail and charged with being a fugitive from justice and homicide in Kitty Hawk. Mascaro waived extradition at a hearing Tuesday, so he will be returning to Kitty Hawk to face those charges.
Dennis-Towne had been staying with Mascaro and his family in nearby Nags Head, according to Nags Head Police Chief Kevin Brinkley.
The two met when Mascaro lived in Illinois, Brinkley said. Mascaro's parents, who are cooperating with investigators, first reported the two missing on Friday, having last seen them the night before.
