DUCK, N.C. (WAVY) - Randolph College lost a member of its community Wednesday during a drowning in the Outer Banks.
Officials with the Town of Duck said crews responded to a report of a swimmer in distress off of Poteskeet Drive in Duck. Joseph Marotta, 39, of Lynchburg was pulled from the water and pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Randolph College, Marotta joined the college in February 2012 as a controller.
"Joe most often could be seen on campus with a smile on his face, and we were extremely proud of him in the fall when he was ordained as Permanent Deacon for Holy Cross Catholic Church after years of preparation," the college said in a statement. "he was a fine person and respected and loved by many in our community."
Marotta leaves behind a wife and five children. Officials said surf conditions were moderate with a low risk of rip current. The water was 64 degrees.
Wet weather is expected to move into the area over the weekend, forcing some areas to cancel or change their holiday events.
Four vehicles were involved in a crash on Route 17 in Gloucester Friday morning.
Hampton Police want to prevent crime and have remixed a holiday classic to deter thieves from being Grinches.
