HERTFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - A Chief Deputy with the Hertford County Sheriff's Office has been charged with assault, inflicting serious injury and simple assault following an incident involving an inmate.
The inmate has also been on various charges regarding the incident on June 12.
According to Juan Vaughan with the Hertford County Sheriff's Department, Chief Deputy Timothy Lassiter has been suspended with pay after an inmate, Troy Powell, said he was assaulted by Lassiter and another deputy during his transport from a court room back to a detention facility.
Powell was charged with two counts of communicating threats, malicious conduct by prisoner, resisting public officer, assault on government official, disorderly conduct and assault.
According to Vaughan, Powell was already jailed for injury to personal property, driving while license revoked and two counts of resisting a public officer.
