NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) has delivered the submarine Minnesota to the U.S. Navy, almost 11 months ahead of schedule.
NNS started the construction of Minnesota in February 2008, and it was authenticated in May 2011. The 10th Virginia-class submarine is named to honor residents of Minnesota.
"This is a success story of the teamwork between the crew and shipbuilder," said Cmdr. John Fancher, Minnesota's commanding officer.
NNS is a Huntington Ingalls Industries company, which builds and maintains ships for the Navy and Coast Guard.
Police say a 2-year-old and a 23-year-old Navy sailor based in Virginia were killed in a crash on Interstate 64 in southern Indiana near Corydon.
