SAN DIEGO (WAVY) - Lockheed Martin delivered the U.S. Navy Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 101's first F-35C Lightning II carrier variant aircraft Saturday. It was brought to the squadron's home at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
The Navy believes this fifth-generation fighter will enhance flexibility, power and strike capabilities of carrier air wings and joint task forces. The F-35C will also compliment the F/A 18 Super Hornet, which currently serves as the Navy's premier strike fighter.
By 2025, all the Navy's aircraft carrier-based air wings will have a mix of the F-35C, Super Hornets and other aircraft. That includes the locally-based air wings here in Hampton Roads.
VFA 101, which is based at Eglin Air Force Base, will serve as the F-35C Fleet Replacement Squadron, training both aircrew and maintenance personnel to fly and repair the F-35C.
