MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT - A Navy draft study calls for 13 Marine Corps squadrons of thenew F-35B jet fighter to be based at air stations in theCarolinas.
The Sun Journal of New Bern reported on Wednesday that theNavy's draft environmental statement suggests basing options for 11operational squadrons and two fleet replacement squadrons. Thefinal report is expected in November.
The report said the Navy's preferred option puts eightoperational squadrons at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point,three operational squadrons at South Carolina's Marine Corps AirStation Beaufort and two fleet replacement squadrons inBeaufort.
The F-35B is supposed to replace the Marine Corps' AV-8BHarriers, EA-6B Prowlers and F/A-18 Hornet jets.
