NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - At 2 p.m. on Aug. 2, USS Nicholas received a new commander.
Cmdr. Cory Blaser relieved Cmdr. Steve F. Fuller as commanding officer of the guided-missile frigate.
Under Fuller's command, USS Nicolas supported Operation Martillo and in doing so, the ship and her crew disrupted a total of 7,350 kilograms of cocaine and 500 pounds of marijuana . The overall worth of the drugs is more than $515 million, according to the U.S. Navy.
According to a press release from Naval Station Norfolk, Blaser's tours include roles as navigator in USS Stephen w. Groves (FFG 29), Combat Information Center officer in USS Carney (DDG 64), weapons control officer and combat systems officer in USS Porter (DDG 78) and executive officer in USS Doyle (FFG 39).
A company has been hired to complete the repairs to the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge on the Outer Banks, but how long those repairs will take remains unknown.
Drivers traveling between Hatteras Island and the mainland were forced to use an emergency ferry Wednesday, following the sudden closure of the Bonner Bridge Tuesday.
State officials say construction on a new Bonner Bridge has been delayed for years because of a legal battle with an environmental group.
