NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Yorktown woman was shot in the abdomen Sunday night while visiting friends in the Denbigh area.
Newport News police spokesman Harold Eley said the 23-year-old suffered the gunshot wound in 200 block of Beechmont Drive around 7:40 p.m.
Eley said 24-year-old Ashton Wells of Hampton was handling a firearm when it discharged, and the bullet struck the woman. Wells told police the gun went off accidentally while he was putting it away.
Medics took the woman to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and doctors list her in stable condition.
