WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) - The College of William and Mary revealed its new mascot Tuesdayevening: Griffin
After a 16-month search, and controversy surrounding its formermascot, the College of William and Mary welcomed Griffin to theTribe.
In 2006, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)ruled that the use of the word "Tribe" was fine, but decided thatWilliam and Mary's feathered logo could be considered offensive toNative Americans and had to go. The college appealed the NCAAdecision, but that appeal was denied.
Hundreds of ideas for a new mascot were submitted, and severalfinalists were selected.
The top five selected mascot finalists were: the Griffin, Kingand Queen, Phoenix, Pug and Wren.
Out of 283 votes in a WAVY.com poll, the King and Queen won with26 percent of the vote.
