VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Pyrotechnic flare operations will be conducted off the coast of Virginia Beach this weekend.
Battalion Chief Amy Valdez with the Virginia Beach Fire Department said the VBFD Marine Fire Rescue Team will conduct the operations Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
Flares will be visible from the shore in the Oceanfront area, Valdez said. The Coast Guard is aware of the training as well as VB Emergency Communications.
Valdez said this is a critical part of maintaining the preparedness and proficiency of rescue crews that have jurisdiction as far as three miles off the coast of Virginia Beach.
A local convicted robber will serve 15 years behind bars for his part in a robbery at the Oceanfront two years ago.
Charges have been made in a domestic abuse investigation involving a 74-year-old woman in Elizabeth City.
Witnesses tell WAVY.com the attack of a shopper was the cause of a heavy police presence at the Ross department store at Military Circle in Norfolk Wednesday night.
