VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Former HRT leader Philip Shucet is involved in a private proposal to extend light rail to Virginia Beach by 2016.
Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms presented Shucet's proposal at a city council session Tuesday. The proposal would extend the light rail from Newtown Road to Rosemont Road.
Shucet owns the Philip Shucet Company. Shucet is a former VDOT commissioner and former head of Hampton Roads Transit.
The proposal will be forwarded to City Manager James Spore, who will then make a recommendation to city council. City council would then have 10 days to decide whether or not to support the proposal.
If approved, law requires the proposal be opened up to private bidding and other investors would have up to 60 days to invest in the proposal.
Earlier estimates by the city placed the expansion to Virginia Beach at 2020 or later.
