VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Red flags are flying at the Oceanfront.
Lifeguards put the flags up Friday morning to warn beach goers of rip currents, especially with the big crowds expected during the holiday weekend.
Officials say if you're not a good swimmer, you should stay out of the water. Experts say never to try and out muscle the current. Instead, swim parallel to the beach, and that will get you out of the rip current.
The best advice: always swim near a lifeguard.
