VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach Police have identified a 56-year-old man who drowned while visiting family at the Oceanfront Saturday afternoon.
Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department said the victim was Steven L. Henry of Mount Prospect, Ill.
Around 3:15 p.m. Saturday, lifeguards pulled Henry from the water at 16th Street. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Witnesses on scene told WAVY.com Henry's daughter was seen running down the beach, yelling for her dad.
Red flags were flying in the resort area because of dangerous water conditions. At this time, emergency crews have not ruled out a medical emergency and are still unsure of rip currents contributed to Henry's death.
This is the first drowning in Virginia Beach in 2012.
Norfolk Police are investigating the cause of death for male found unconscious on the beach.
