VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A Virginia Beach woman has been charged with felony child abuse and neglect in the death of her baby.
According to police, Shaniqua Jones, of the 1300 block of Pine Cone Court, brought her 19-month-old baby to the emergency room at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on Sunday night.
The child was not breathing and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Debbie Williams, one of Jones' neighbors, said she never met Jones or the baby, but often heard the baby cry.
"Yeah, I've heard the baby cry a couple of times and my husband says he heard it crying...and he kept on hearing somebody say, 'shut up'. And he just heard the baby crying," Williams said.
But Williams adds the cries weren't highly unusual for a family with a baby.
Jones is currently being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said work to secure the Bonner Bridge could take anywhere from a week to 90 days.
