VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Mayor Will Sessoms issued a statement pertaining to the deadly shooting at Virginia Beach Town Center early Sunday morning.
Rashawn Dukes, 35, of North Chesterfield, was killed in a shooting in the 4600 block of Columbus Street around 1:30 a.m. Four others were shot and injured.
Monday, Sessoms released the following statement:
I am very concerned about the tragic shooting early Sunday morning at Town Center. Police are currently investigating this crime to the fullest extent possible to determine what happened there, so it is premature to comment about this specific incident.
I will say, however, that Town Center has a remarkable record for safety. This is not the norm. We do not often have incidents like this at Town Center.
I trust our police to fully investigate this crime, wherever the evidence leads. Until they determine what happened there Sunday morning, I cannot comment further.
At least one city council member is also asking police to give council a narrative of what happened. Councilman Bill DeSteph also requested police provide him with a number of calls to the business. He believes this is an isolated incident and wants the data to reassure residents.
Virginia Beach Police have not released any other information, including the gender of those involved and suspect descriptions.
Sources say the shooter drove up to the sidewalk near Guadalajara restaurant in a vehicle and targeted the victim. Sources say the other people injured were bystanders.
A spokesperson for Guadalajara says the shooting did not take place in the restaurant.
Sources say the restaurant was hosting an event for an alumni basketball group that had played a game at Maury High School in Norfolk earlier that night. 10 On Your Side called the event organizer, but he immediately hung up when he heard who was calling.
A motive has also not been released.
