VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A Virginia Beach homeowner returned to his house to discover a burglary suspect asleep in his bedroom.
Police say the home was in disarray; items were scattered about and the walls were spray-painted. When the homeowner walked into a bedroom and found 19-year-old Ryan Kelley asleep, he picked up the phone to call 911.
At that moment, Kelley woke up and decided to make his getaway by jumping out of a second story window, according to officer Tonya Borman.
Next door neighbor Shaul Yitzhak told WAVY.com the homeowners moved out over a year ago and come by to check on it from time to time. Police confirmed it had been 10 days from the homeowners last drop in Sunday morning.
Yitzahk said Kelley and 18-year-old Brandon Lock, a friend of his, had been going into the vacant home to party.
"He was talking about going in there and partying or something and I was... I didn't want him to do it at all and I guess they didn't listen to me."
Police later charged Lock as well. Both men are accused of breaking and entering as well as stealing more than $1700 in property from the home in the 2500 block of Eagles Lake Road.
A Suffolk man told police an HVAC system weighing about three tons was stolen from his property sometime last week.
