VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Friends and family gathered Thursday evening to remember a man killed inside of a Virginia Beach nightclub last weekend.
Police say 30-year-old Sammy Dawkins was hit in the head with a bottle at Royal Blue on Baker Road.
"We are here to celebrate the life of my brother," Dawkins's sister Syreeta Dawkins said.
Grazia Moyers with VBPD said police found Dawkins injured inside the club. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"I don't think it matters what happened, but my son is dead," Dawkins' mother Pamela Gadson said "My only son at 30 years old is dead."
Friends say Dawkins was where he loved to be - on the dance floor.
"He was a dancer," Gadson said. "He liked to throw his hands up and shake."
Virginia Beach police say Dawkins was struck with a bottle during an unprovoked attack.
"He was hit in the head with a wine bottle and it killed him," Syreeta Dawkins said.
Police later arrested 23-year-old Lennell Skeeter in connection with Dawkins' death. The two reportedly had never met.
"You never know when you are going to get that call, because never did I think in a million years it was that call," Syreeta Dawkins said.
"There is nothing like the love of mother losing her child," Gadson said. "I can't tell you how it feels."
Skeeter has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and is incarcerated without bond.
