VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Three people were displaced early Monday morning after a condo caught fire.
The fire damaged at least one unit at Sawgrass Condos located in the 1100 block of Ocean Pebbles Way around 1 a.m. Tim Riley with the Virginia Beach Fire Department said the fire was ruled accidental in nature.
Neighbors said they saw a man jump from a second level balcony to escape the flames. Riley said the man was transported to a local hospital after breaking an arm.
The man's father, Jeff Quail, told WAVY.com he was grateful everyone got out alive.
"The neighbors pitched in," Quail said. "They did a really nice job because they got out in their pajamas. The neighbors all pitched in, gave them clothes and helped them along."
A second man received minor burns while trying to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.
It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control. Capt. Stacy Boyd with the Virginia Beach Fire Department told WAVY.com on scene a cinder block wall helped prevent the spread of the fire to other units.
A working smoke detector is credited with helping alert the residents to the fire.
