VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The City of Virginia Beach is asking Tom Treesh to scale down his iconic "boat house" in Chick's Beach.
Treesh told WAVY.com the home was built by his grandfather, but he has been adding "boat" features to the front of it for the past 20 years.
"They want me to do away with a whole lot of the stuff I've been doing; artwork, mosaics..." Treesh said.
The city says the home's "bow" needs to be scaled back to conform with zoning laws.
"It made me cry a couple of times, because of all the work I've done," Treesh said. "It had been here so long, I think it was grandfathered in, but then we found out, grandfathering in isn't always what you think it is."
"We're willing to comply with anything, but to be honest with you, the boat is Tom's heart," Treesh's girlfriend Jerrie Delozier said.
Norfolk Police are investigating the cause of death for male found unconscious on the beach.
