VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Two people were rescued after their kayak collided with a tourist ship near the Rudee Inlet, according to Coast Guard officials.
A Coast Guard spokesperson told WAVY.com a vessel, the Lost Pearl, collided with a two-person kayak around 6 p.m. Saturday. The two people in the kayak were assisted by the Virginia Beach Fire Department.
According to Virginia Beach EMS Chief Ed Brazle, a man with potentially life-threatening injuries was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Brazle said the other kayaker, a woman, had no apparent injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
Chief Brazle said at this point, he does not know the extent of the man’s injuries. As of Sunday, Coast Guard officials told WAVY.com the man was at the hospital in critical condition.
A witness, Jeff Duke, told WAVY's Lauren Compton he was fishing at Rudee Inlet Saturday evening when the incident happened. He said he saw the paddle boarders, and let them go in front of his boat.
Duke told WAVY he then saw the pirate ship approaching the kayakers. He said the pirate ship collided with the kayakers, and he jumped into the water to help the people.
"At that point we couldn't really see them, they were not that close. We saw them jump out of the kayak, and actually go under the water. I turned my boat around as fast as I could and I jumped in and my brother followed. We wanted to see if they were okay," said Duke.
Duke said one man and one woman were in the kayak. He was able to get the woman out on his small boat. He told WAVY the male kayaker was under the pirate ship for longer.
The Coast Guard is now investigating the incident. Officials with the Coast Guard told WAVY's Lauren Compton they have not placed any restrictions on the Lost Pearl or the captain of the vessel.
