VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - They're creepy, crawly and will invade every space in your home, especially your kitchen. Local exterminators say they've seen a huge jump in the number of calls for ant infestations.
"Everybody is just absolutely being inundated with ants," said Keith McCormick with A-Active Termite and Pest Control. "It's a long term battle for a solution. There's no quick fix for ants."
McCormick says this could be the worst summer for ants in a decade.
"It's mainly the rain that we've been having that has really caused a lot of the ant situation," he added.
The rain has forced the insects to find dry ground. Many times they find it inside a home. The most common type of ant is the "odorous house ant."
"They are the ones that pretty much are going to be invading," McCormick said.
The colonies can reach in the tens of thousands, and the ants can travel as far as 100 yards from home base.
"With the amount of colonies that are out there, we will kill one off and another one will happen to move right back in," McCormick said.
Exterminators say there are things that can be done around the house to protect yourself -- the most important of these is to cut back your shrubs so they don't touch your home. You can spray ant poison around the perimeter of your house, but if the bushes are touching, it creates a bridge for insects cross over.
WAVY.com was told you should never put bait traps inside your home because that will attract ants in. You don't know how far the ants have traveled and they might die before the food gets back to the queen. You want to find where they are coming from outside and put the trap there.
