SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - For years, Chopper 10 pilot John Massey has been giving views the news and traffic from the sky, now viewers are helping him fight for his life.
About 100 people came out to Suffolk for a cornhole event to raise money for Massey, who has suffered liver failure. Massey is on the waiting list for an organ donation.
The money raised form the Eye of the Sky tournament will help pay for some of his medical bills. Massey and his wife Evelynn say they were touched so many people came out to support them.
"It really means a lot to us," the couple told WAVY.com. "I had no idea the Hampton Roads community would come out together like this."
"The community out there in Driver, this is how we've always been," event organizer Lisa Bordeaux added. "When somebody needs something or needs us, this is how we come together."
A nearby barbecue restaurant donated all of the food for the event. Organizers say cornhold groups from North Carolina, Hampton and Virginia Beach came out to help Massey's cause.
Another fundraiser is scheduled for Dec. 9 in Virginia Beach.
