PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth Police arrested a man Saturday evening after a citizen reported suspicious activity a local church.
Jan Clark with Portsmouth Police said Two male suspects were seen loading lawn equipment into a truck at the West Park Church of Christ in the 900 block of Cherokee Road around 11 p.m. When officers arrived they found 49-year-old John Fitzgerald Smith hiding in the area.
Several items totaling over $500 were missing from the church, including a riding lawn mower, a gas-powered weed eater, and two gas-powered leaf blowers.
Detectives found evidence that Smith was linked to the crime as well as a second male suspect that fled the area in a vehicle before officers arrived, according to Clark.
Smith, a Suffolk resident, was arrested and charged with burglary and grand larceny.
A man is facing attempted abduction charges after police said he tried to grab two juvenile girls and exposed himself.
