PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - The Coast Guard was unable to contact the owner of a sinking boat Thursday, forcing crews to federalize the response to obtain funds for cleanup.
According to the Coast Guard, crews received reports of a 70-year-old, 50' recreational boat sinking in the Ocean Marine Yacht Center in Portsmouth around 4:30 a.m.
Because of the possibility of an oil spill and pollution, crews deployed a containment boom around the boat. The boat's owner was not found, so the Coast Guard had to use the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to help with cleanup efforts.
A van crashed into a house in Virginia Beach Wednesday, and fire officials said an elderly driver was behind the wheel.
