HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Police in Newport News are investigating a Thursday morningabduction and robbery. Police say a 63-year-old man reported thathe was jumped from behind by a man with a knife and forced into hisvehicle in the 1200 block of 79th Street.
Police say the victim was punched several times and taken to aHampton motel room where he was then tied to a chair and ordered togive up his ATM pin number. The victim complied and was left alonein the room where he was able to free himself and call police,police said.
The suspect is apparently using the victim's ATM card, andpolice are now chasing down the surveillance video with hopes wewill be able to show you the man who is using the card. "We havenumerous leads to follow. The ATM card is leaving a paper andvideo trail, and detectives are going to different locations inNewport News and Hampton. We are trying to get video of thisguy using the card," says Detective L. LeGrande of the Newport NewsPolice Department.
The victim told a neighbor he thinks he was targeted because thesuspect was laying in wait knowing he had to go to work at 4:30 inthe morning at the shipyard, and his car had been broken intorecently.
The suspect has been described as a tall black male, between 6foot 1 to 6 foot 3 inches tall, wearing a red or burgundy shirtwith a yellow image in the center.
