VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Dozens of people gazed at the tall ships from Lynnhaven Fishing Pier Friday morning. Some people drove from all over to take pictures as the sun was rising over the Chesapeake Bay.
More than a dozen ships were anchored near the pier before heading to the Elizabeth River for the Harborfest Parade of Sail.
"We came out here for dinner last night and decided to come out this morning," said Betsy Eklof, who is visiting Virginia Beach from Vermont.
Some of the spectators were at OpSail in 2000.
"It was crowded," said Jim Jenkins, who is from Richmond. "It was packed. It was fun. There were lots of tall ships to board."
When the sun was up, every ship in the Bay sounded their horns and some set off canons.
"I thought it was very moving, especially with the canons going off," said Gail Chase. "It was like the start of a great day."
