NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Police have two Norfolk men in custody for a shooting that injured two teenagers and four adults. It happened at the Lexington Apartments on Tidewater Drive just before 11 p.m. on Friday.
Police say Darren Roberts, Kyle Thornton, and a third suspect, who has not been identified, were all at a big party.
Thornton and the unnamed suspect started shooting at each other. Roberts came to Thornton's defense and also started shooting, according to police.
Thornton and Roberts' families talked only to 10 On Your Side about what happened Friday night. Thornton's mother and Roberts' sister asked us to hide their identities out of fear of retaliation.
Family members tell WAVY.com Thornton and Roberts are cousins, and went to Lexington Apartments to celebrate another cousin's high school graduation.
Relatives say the party was larger than they anticipated. They estimate more than 200 people came to the graduation cookout. Family members say a man approached Thornton and picked a fight with him. They do not know what sparked the fight.
Thornton and Roberts' family members tell 10 On Your Side the men are innocent. Roberts' sister says she received a phone call before the shooting Friday night that leads her to believe the cousins were set up. She says the caller told her the 'Huntersville Boys' were coming to shoot Roberts and Thornton.
"About 11:15 p.m. I got a phone call from someone telling me, 'Call your brother! Call your cousin, tell them to get out of there. They are about to shoot them up'," Roberts' sister said. "I kept calling my brother's
phone but he didn't answer the phone."
"Kyle called back again, and he said, 'Mom it's too late. They already got the guns on them.' Then the phone hung up. Then Kyle's girlfriend called and she was crying and crying," said Thornton's mother.
Thornton's girlfriend is seven months pregnant, and she was at the party with him. She says when Thornton was shot in the ankle, he fell on top of her.
10 On Your Side asked police if the 'Huntersville Boys' are a gang or if they believed the shooting was gang related. Investigators say they could not comment on that, but they have not ruled it out.
