NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Residents in the Wards Corner & Talbot Park area of Norfolk say they've always felt their neighborhoods were quiet and secure, until now.
“I feel a little upset, a little mad, a little rage,” said Rodger Spruill. “You know there's somebody looking at your home, watching to see if anyone's there. You feel real violated. It's yours. You worked for it. You paid for it. And somebody goes and takes it.”
There have been two burglaries within the last week in Riverpoint. No one was home during those burglaries, and entrance was made through the back of homes. Police also have surveillance pictures from an attempted burglary on Whiting Street. Those suspects were arrested on Tuesday, but considering all that’s been going on, no one’s willing to let their guard down.
“If it's easy for them, they're going to keep doing it,” said Jim McDonnell, Civic League President. “We're just trying to make it hard for them. We don't want them creeping in our area.”
McDonnell has been alerting residents in the area about some recognizable patterns and red flags they may spot.
“Essentially what [the thieves are] doing is looking for people who aren't home or may be home, but not answering the door, and they coordinate an effort to break-in,” said McDonnell. “In some instances, they've offered to do yard work -- cleaning gutters, cutting grass -- and they have no equipment rakes or brooms with them.”
Besides asking for help from police, people in the area know they have to step up too. McDonnell has reminded residents not to answer the door for strangers, report ALL suspicious activity, and keep their homes secure at all times. Also important: not leaving anything in plain view in your car, including GPS brackets, CD's and loose change.
If you know anything about the break-ins in this area, call the NPD Burglary Unit at (757) 664-7011 or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
Police say a 2-year-old and a 23-year-old Navy sailor based in Virginia were killed in a crash on Interstate 64 in southern Indiana near Corydon.
