NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A man and a woman suffered gunshot wounds Saturday evening in an apparent accident.
Police received a call about two gunshot victims in the 6100 block of North Military Highway around 7 p.m., according to Karen Parker-Chesson with the Norfolk Police Department.
Parker-Chesson said the man told police he shot himself while cleaning his firearm. When the weapon discharged, the woman was also struck, he said.
Norfolk police initially said it happened in the Kmart parking lot near Norview Avenue. Now, they say they believe the shooting happened at a home on Crescent Way.
According to police, the victims decided to attempt to drive themselves to a local hospital but an emergency dispatcher they spoke with persuaded them to pull over and wait for an ambulance.
Customers outside the Kmart Saturday night feared the worse.
"The first thing that came to mind when I saw the crime tape was, 'Somebody is dead,'" said customer Jasper McMichael.
Customers said the curiosity about the crime scene and what led to shooting won't keep them away.
"That's just one incident, it's not like I come out here everyday and there is something like this happening," said customer Ebony Murphy.
Both victims were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, Parker-Chesson said.
There is no word if anyone is facing charges.

A disturbing national trend has found it's way into eastern North Carolina. There have been reports of young men punching innocent people -- with the intention of knocking them out -- and the victims never see it coming.
