Norfolk, Va. (WAVY) - Wednesday morning, the first Amtrak train in 35 years rolled into Norfolk, picking up 35 of its passengers.
Many passengers took advantage of the introductory $19 tickets from Norfolk to Washington, D.C., a special price for December train rides.
WAVY.com checked ticket prices online, and there are very few $19 tickets left to and from Washington, D.C.
"This is the best thing that has happened in years," said passenger William Bowling said. "It's something that was absolutely needed and absolutely time."
First-time rider Marion Daniels was excited about the low price of the ride.
"This is my first time," Daniels said. "It's such a wonderful opportunity at this reduced rate."
The $114 million dollar project to extend the passenger rail service to Norfolk has been in the works since 2009.
Camden County Sheriff Tony Perry said that during the last two weeks, incidents of breaking and entering and home or vehicle larceny have increased in two areas of the county.
