NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk Fire-Rescue is adding a 34-foot firefighting and rescue boat with state of the art equipment to its flotilla.
Julian Williamson with the City of Norfolk announced that the city and the Norfolk Fire-Rescue will commission a new fire boat Friday at 11 a.m. at Nauticus.
The boat will bolster Norfolk Fire-Rescue's ability to fight fires, search and rescue victims and transport patients. It's crew will work alongside the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy in assisting neighboring fire and law enforcement agencies.
Named after the first fire chief of Norfolk, the vessel will be called "Thomas Kevill."
State officials say construction on a new Bonner Bridge has been delayed for years because of a legal battle with an environmental group.
The Coast Guard transported two people off Hatteras Island early Thursday morning following the sudden closure of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge Tuesday.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says dredging beneath the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge will likely begin Friday afternoon.
