NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A 21-year-old Norfolk mother is charged with murder and child abuse in the death of her newborn daughter.
Norfolk police say 1-month-old Audree Michelle Foster was pronounced dead at DePaul Hospital Saturday, Oct. 13 after being transported from a home in the 400 block of Walsingham Way.
The Medical Examiner's Office has not released the cause and manner of the baby's death.
The child's mother, Asia Jatanya Foster, 21, was charged with second degree murder Monday.
She has had two court appearances since then, during which she wad denied bond. Her next court date is set for Jan. 14.
"It definitely shocked me," said neighbor Russell Wilson. "I didn't think that a mother could do that to her own daughter. I love my child to death, I wouldn't think about doing anything like that."
WAVY.com has confirmed the infant's father, Joseph Foster, is assigned to USS Barry. LCDR Jereal Dorsey said Foster was deployed when the baby died, but has since returned home on emergency leave.
It's not clear if Joseph Foster had the chance to meet his daughter.
His wife kept an online journal during her pregnancy.
Asia Foster wrote: "We just obtained her a lot sooner than expected. And it's going to be hard but with the strength of the lord anything is possible to get through."
Reading the young mother's words, you can feel her excitement as she anticipated Audree's arrival.
"Joey and I are young, yeah we probably DON'T know what we are getting ourselves into. But one thing I know is that I love him, and I'm going to love our baby girl more than anything in this world," wrote Foster. "And we both are working very hard to make sure she is going to grow up safe, healthy, and stable."
Her online posts leave many wondering what went wrong.
Asia Foster is being held at the Norfolk City Jail.
