NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Shortly after midnight Wednesday Norfolk firefighters were called to a fire at the Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church located in the 6900 block of Newport Avenue,
According to Battalion Chief Harry Worley, an alarm at the church's daycare alerted emergency crews to the fire. When crews arrived, they found a fire inside the church. The fire was under control around 1 a.m. and crews remained on scene for a few hours as investigators worked to determine the cause of the fire.
The Rev. Dr. John Monroe of the church tells WAVY.com, "I'm very concerned about what it's going to do to our daycare center, what it's going to do to our ministry during the week and the extent of the repairs."
The fire was contained to the inside of the church and the cause is not known at this time.
