NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A young woman who had just turned 21 years old was killed during the early morning hours Friday in Norfolk.
According to police, a Honda traveling southbound in the 6200 block of Tidewater Drive crossed into the northbound lanes, hitting a marked Norfolk police cruiser head-on.
The passenger in the Honda, identified as Karoline Johnson of Norfolk owned the car, and was killed in the crash.
"She was very ecstatic to turn 21," Karoline's sister Kendall Johnson said. "We were going out tonight, but I guess she couldn't wait and went out last night."
An officer involved in the crash was also transported, but his injuries are non-life threatening.
The male driver of the car was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
"Karoline was very much against driving drunk, and had a friend take the wheel," Kendall Johnson said. "He forgot to turn on the lights, crossed the line, and hit a police officer head on... we have been told alcohol and speed were factors in the crash."
Police have not filed any charges in the crash.
"It is very emotional. She was more like a child to me than an employee, very difficult," Karoline's boss Delton Dunbar said.
Dunbar said Karoline always showed up with a positive attitude.
"Very trust worthy, very religious young lady," Dunbar said. "She was very responsible. I know people in their 30s who are not as responsible as she was."
Karoline's family is donating her organs on a day that was to be filled with such joy that ended in tragedy.
"There is no better gift at this point than to give the gift of life on your birthday," Kendall Johnson said.
Karoline went to Norfolk Christian School until 8th grade before going to Norview High School graduating in 2010.
