NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A 24-year-old Virginia Beach man was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed on Interstate 264 Tuesday night.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said the crash occurred just before 8 p.m. near Campostella Road. According to troopers, a 2006 Toyota Matrix driven by Charles Anthony Smalls was traveling at a high rate of speed in the westbound lanes when he entered a work zone and struck a cone.
Anaya said Smalls lost control of his vehicle and struck at 2013 Dodge Caravan before running off the road and hitting the jersey wall, overturning several times. Smalls was ejected and killed.
Speed was a factor in the crash and Smalls was not wearing a seatbelt, Anaya added. Alcohol is unknown at this time. A passenger in Smalls' vehicle and the occupants of the Caravan were not injured.
The crash caused a major backup on the interstate and blocked all westbound lanes. Traffic was diverted off the interstate as crews worked the crash.
Norfolk Police are investigating the cause of death for male found unconscious on the beach.
Speaker Bill Howell will be in Chesapeake Monday to address the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization.
