NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - After months of anticipation, the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk has named its baby Siamang. The zoo held a Facebook contest to get suggestions. And the winning name is... LOLA!
Lola captured 46 percent of the vote, followed by Malaya, Baaboo and Siamangtha.
Zoo staff selected the final four names from all the Facebook suggestions. Six people actually suggested the name Lola, but it was Jonathan Wenzel who won a $200 zoo gift shop shopping spree. His name was chosen at random.
"This contest has been fun for everyone," said Greg Bockheim, the Zoo's executive director. "The most important thing, however, is that people learn about Siamangs, and help protect wildlife and their habitats."
