CHICAGO (WAVY) - WAVY.com has learned that Michael Vick has signed a multi-year deal with Nike.
Nike spokesperson Megan Saalfeld said, "We have re-signed Michael Vick as a Nike athlete. Michael acknowledges his past mistakes. We do not condone those actions, but we support the positive changes he has made to better himself off the field."
Chicago-based Attorney Andrew Stroth told CNN that it's a community outreach partnership, not simply an endorsement. Stroth is Michael Vick's marketing agent who negotiated the deal.
Stroth said there were various companies that wanted Vick, but Vick chose Nike because they are a world class brand and he wants to reach the youth.
Vick, a Newport-News native, is reinventing his brand and thinks that Nike was the best choice, according to Stroth.
Vick's first project is currently in discussions.
Nike, which signed Vick as a rookie in 2001, terminated his contract in August 2007 after he filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in a dogfighting ring.
